And the irony is that DB2 does this. Just saw a post on the ITToolbox DB2 forum yesterday:

"What is the best way to move database from one machine to another?"

The answer: "The easiest way is a redirect restore, back it up and restore it."

Looked like it applied to renaming as well.

The iSeries should be the leader here, not the follower....

Well, if IBM wants the iSeries to be used as a practical database back end for pure java applications, this is the kind of thing that really needs to be supported. The ability to backup a database and restore it to a new location (for silly things, like testing) should be part of the core OS.
