RE: Why NOT the web?

Assuming a LAN connection for an ERP is outdated thinking.  Our current
JDE World ERP implementation is used across North America and what we're
rolling out starting next month, JDE/PeopleSoft/Oracle Enterprise One,
will be used across the globe.  Even the local users aren't local to the
system as it's in a separate data center and only has a T1 out.  (It
will move elsewhere and share a 45Mb link at some point)  The apps can
be used over dial-up, especially World, but we try to outfit everyone
with at least a DSL connection.

There will be data feeds to/from some of our .Net systems, but the apps,
data, and web interface will all be 100% on our i5.  Even the Enterprise
One Deployment Server will run on an IXS.

BTW, the iSeries was the _only_ platform considered for running
Enterprise One.  It has been by far the most stable system in our
network over the years.  That not only includes Windows servers, but the
basic network infrastructure devices as well.  It also doesn't need
clustering support, has lower admin costs, has a smaller footprint (with
the i5 generation), and allows better workload consolidation and upgrade
capabilities.

About the only 3rd party hardware we'll use will be some nifty gadgets
that give users in Singapore the same response time as those in San
Francisco.

As for data transfer rates, I assume we're looking at "local" machines
since we're speaking of an ERP app. I would imagine it all 10MBit if not
100MBit ether, so rates aren't an issue.
