Chris: I'd say that the data queue work _could_ be the big hurdle. That has nothing to do with ILE RPG; it's an OS/400 thing. (Not clear how best to implement a generic non-OS/400 replacement.) But outside of that, why not VisualAge for RPG? Given that it can create Java, how does that fit in with the "server want-a-bee's" deal? Is it necessary to generate the programs on the same system they'll be run on? Generate on a PC and run on AIX. AFAIK, 'ILE RPG' just isn't anywhere but iSeries. RPG IV might be elsewhere, but I'm not clear how well that covers 'ILE RPG' in those cases. And some fundamental facilities don't really seem to translate well in environments such as AIX -- anybody seen an AIX subfile lately? Anybody tried recompiling an ILE RPG program that has significant pointer manipulation where the pointers are declared in data structures? Such features aren't exactly part of any HLL; they're again more OS/400 than RPG though VA-RPG has something of a replacement for subfiles, not sure at all about pointers in structures without coding changes. If you are determined to go with "ILE RPG", can you list the non-RPG features that might be also needed? Data queues (or a suitable replacement; some kind of socket-proxy might be devised) was a very good example. Tom Liotta midrange-l-request@xxxxxxxxxxxx wrote: > 9.
