What problems? - I often add new fields within the layout, or expand
existing fields, both single & multimember. Even drop fields.
The only limit i have had so far was changing alpha to num or reverse.
btw- the chgpf command is internally doing a copy. You will get halts
if decimal data errors, and a warning if dropping a field or shortening
a field (warning about potential lost data).
