Subject: sql syntax for update

How would i code a sql update statement
to change only the first 8 characters in a 40 byte alpha field? (i need to
substring) update filename set field1 = 'XXXXXXXX' where field2 = 'W'

I have 2 diff as/400 based sql books & none show this (which seems pretty
basic).
