According to IBM PartnerLine and my distributer... Gigabit capable ports (PCI or Builtin) do not support SNA even at 10 or 100.

Marc,

Are you differentiating "card" from the 2 build in Ethernet ports on the 520, or do they not support SNA either?
If they don't, IBM sure his that well - I couldn't see any reference to it in the Sales Manual on Announcement Letter for the 520. They are basically ignored because they do not have a feature code.

I'm beginning to think that the little i5 model 520 we purchased
the other day is incapable of supporting an APPN/APPC connection
over it's Ethernet card.... Can anyone verify this to be true? Is
this box only capable of supporting a TCP/IP network connection?

It depends on the LAN card. See the System builder redbook. You will find it here : http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/redbooks.nsf/RedpieceAbstracts/sg242155.html?Open

For example : the following cards do not support SNA protocols : 2743, 2760, 5706, 5707.
