Excellent example.  I think the problem with the book is they gave 
everything in hex.  And that's not as clear as the binary.  If I had 
converted the hex sample to binary, and did the intermediate calculations, 
it would have stuck out like Johnny Holmes.

Geez,

Apparently I didn't either <grin>.

See if this new example helps:

select * from YCSC1 where land(YSTAT1, x'40') = x'40'

the results of land is simply the results of a binary and between the 
fields
passed.

0110 1101
0100 0000
------------
0100 0000

Since were dealing with single byte fields, and x'40' has only one bit on,
if my results is equal to x'40' then the YSTAT1 field had bit 7 on.
