Depends on whether you're counting from least-significant to
most-significant, or vice versa, and whether you're numbering the bits
starting with 0 or 1.

Are we talking the 40 (hex) bit? The 80 (hex) bit? The 2 (hex) bit? The 1
(hex) bit?

If you're talking about the 40 or 80 bit, all you need to do is check if
the field value is greater than or equal to a character with just that bit
set.

If you're talking about the 1 or 2 bit, it gets a bit more complicated.
