Perhaps this belongs on JAVA400-L, perhaps JAVA101, perhaps here. Since it might effect everyone, I figure I'll start here -- Midrange-L. http://www-106.ibm.com/developerworks/db2/zones/cloudscape/ An IBM announcement said they were donating Cloudscape source to the Apache Software Foundation. Cloudscape is an embeddable DBMS(?) in Java. Blurbs about Cloudscape include stuff like "The Cloudscape Network Server receives and replies to queries from clients using standard Distributed Database Architecture (DRDA) protocol", "support for complex SQL transactions and JDBC allows your applications to migrate to other SQL databases, such as IBM DB2Â Universal Databaseâ (UDB), when they need to grow" and "Cloudscape is a pure Java class library". I don't pretend to grasp any implications particularly since I have no solid idea of what Cloudscape 'is'. I'm curious what implications might show up for iSeries programmers. My pie-in-the-sky thoughts start running like this... So, I could create a Java application with an embedded database. I'd access it from ILE RPG by way of... a RDB directory entry, i.e., DRDA??? If so, then perhaps the 'Network Server' framework could also be on my iSeries; so the RDB entry would point to...??? Does anybody have a concept of how 'Cloudscape' might actually show up in the future?
