Original Message >> What printer were you able to convince to actually print your PDF417 barcode? Response: Currently I'm using Infoprint Server's PDF subsystem to generate an email with an attachment. I then open the attachment and use Acrobat Reader to print the file. Currently our users are using an ancient PC with a dot-matrix printer to generate these reports. I've been tasked with replacing this report with one generated on the iSeries. Imagine my embarrassment when I have to tell them that our super-duper midrange machine can't do it. Well, it can, but only in an inconvenient way. There may be a few IBM printers that can handle it. See IBM's document ID: FLASH10125. I'm trying to get some confirmation on the IP1145 printer and whether it could print these barcodes. Basically, the way I read it, the iSeries isn't capable of rendering PDF417 (except in the PDF subsystem), so it sends a barcode request, similar to a hardware font request, and the printer does the rendering. This can only be done with IPDS protocol. In summary, to print these 2D barcodes directly, you'll need a printer that both supports IPDS and also supports PDF417 in its micro-code.
