Short of writing a program to read and write all the records, I can't think of another way. However, perhaps you could convince your customer to accept an alternative solution. Instead of marker records _in_ the file (which would have to be removed by whatever application processes the file, adding complexity) write a pair of marker _files_. They wouldn't have to have any data, just suitable names. So your FTP script might have lines like this: put FTPSTART put DATAFILE put FTPFINISH You might want to delete them first if they are already there, but if not, then their timestamps would show when the process last ran.
