Depending on file size, and disk availability. I don't think you want to ftp one file at a time. Your save file idea has a lot of merit. However you'll need extra disk space for that. Be sure to save compressed. It may be that tape is the fastest. Just last week, (granted it was not LAN, but WAN) I ended up using tape to transfer a few files to IBM because FTP was too slow.
