SQL Timestamp Default -- MIDRANGE-L

How do you specify a date for a default value with a timestamp variable?
I've tried combinations of 

STARTDATE TIMESTAMP WITH DEFAULT "20040318" with the defauly value
surrounded by apostrophes, quotes, and with and without dashes...

What am I missing?
