I took this time to open up the SQL reference and study each and every one 
of the scalar functions and didn't see one that would do the trick, all by 
itself.  There are some items in there that I never would have thought of.

If SQL it must be you could always take Gerry's example, test it, and turn 
it into a UDF and call that from SQL.  For more information on UDF's check 
out this list's FAQ list.
