Bill, you're joining the dark side. You'll get better answers on that list. While there, ask Leif Svalgaard about his eBook, good explanations of what you're starting to look at.

Spaces are one of the primary building blocks for objects on the 400 - they are often the place where the actual working contents are kept - like executable code for a program, data for a file, etc.

If you're brave (first time, anyway), STRSST, sign in, then
1. Start a service tool
4. Display/Alter/Dump
1. Display/Alter storage
1. Machine Interface (MI) object

you'll see a list of MI object types. Option 25, Space(19) is the starting point for physical files, e.g., with a subtype of 01.

You'll probably need a service user profile and password - it's not the same as your system one, not even QSECOFR. These are set up in DST. Oy, what a tangled web...
