More than you can count Shannon, more than you can count. I've watched more than one company pour tens of millions of dollars into project after project that were supposed to replace home-grown and/or store bought iseries solutions that maybe could be termed 'unwieldy' due to legacy design flaws, but ran the company's business day after day, and have yet to be adequately replaced. each time, the new system would be piloted, the users would point out serious deficiencies, middle management would find their jobs nearly impossible to perform, and they would throw the whole thing on the scrap heap, only to have new executive try the whole thing over again. meanwhile, the iseries just kept chugging along. Many years ago, I consulted for a company in the food manufacturing and distribution industry. They had several niche products that they did very well, and were always very profitable. The company was bought by a huge food conglomerate (best foods), right away, the suits came in to assess the company's IT infrastructure. they had a 400, running in s/36 mode. a few PCs networked together, and that was it. Sales over $100m a year, and their IT budget was less than half a million a year... you can guess what happened next.... and they just never learn, do they? rick ----------original message------------- Wow! There's a whole host of lessons to be learned from this tale! I wonder how many other software projects took such a downward, wayward spiral as this? Thanks Joe. Very interesting. Shannon O'Donnell
