My windoze (XP, and probably all earlier versions) has for some reason a 
different syntax for ftp and telnet:

ftp  my.ip.address.01:myport

but

telnet  my.ip.address.01  myport

But why not use a REAL operating system utility: 

ftp + F4
and 
telnet + F4
