IBM is in a constant fight to reduce costs, and I think that system
(physical) locks on low cost boxes are a sacrificial lamb.

A few prices of advice:

1). Even though your model 810 is more powerful than a B60 and has more
DASD than 6 racks of 9335's (the biggest 400 you could buy in 1988 - the
year that it was announced), it doesn't negate the fact that your system
needs to be in a locked computer room. When no one's looking, most
reasonably savvy 400 people can break into a system, so lock your system
up, as well as the console.

2). If you *REALLY need a lock, tell IBM, and then expect to pay for it
*BIGTIME. The unfortunate fact of the matter is that most 400 users don't
think that they need a lock, and so they aren't willing to pay for it.
There's always a company called MOSLER! Seriously, the fact that the ivory
CISC systems had a serious lock could have been bypassed by a clever person
with a paperclip. I did so for a vendor that had locked their 9404 at
COMMON in Anaheim in the fall of 1989 who left their key at home.

Just got our new 810 operational. This box blows the doors off of our 720.
One thing has me puzzled though. There is no key to lock the main control
panel. Is anyone aware of a software solution to lock this front panel or
do I have to bring in my Rottweiler to protect it.

Thanks,

Mark
