Problem using telnet from AS/400 to AS/400

I am using telnet to connect from one AS/400 to another. Occasionally my
session will lock up. The screen will be blank and the session will be input
inhibited. I can clear it by pressing ATTN and selecting option 2 (query
connection status) but it's getting to be a pain. 

Because I am going through a firewall I can only telnet from the AS/400. The
source system is V4R5 and the target system is V5R2.

What is causing this and how can I prevent from happening?
