Andy, how about:

create view itemview ("Item_Number", "Item_Description") as        
select                          
  ITM_NUM,      
  ITM_DESC 
  From ITEMMASTER     

Note that you will probably have to use the quotes as part of the column
name. While not perfec, it may beautify 400 column name more to your
liking.

Above statement should have the same affect as:

create view itemview as        
select                          
  ITM_NUM AS "Item_Number",      
  ITM_DESC AS "Item_Description"
  From ITEMMASTER
