We find that performance is OK with cable or DSL connection to our LinkSys VPN router/firewall (sort of). Security at the remotes is an issue (or at home in our case). You need some kind of firewall on each PC, since they are open to the Internet with this methodology and anyone who can reverse-connect to the remote PC has access to you internal resources. ZoneAlarm has been recommended, although I find it to be a royal pain and it is not polite when you want to uninstall it. Others may have better suggestions here. Other VPN appliances will also give you better protection than the LinkSys - it is cheap and hence not as robust as others - and often have their own client. You need to determine your confidence level. As a software development house, our exposure is not of the same nature as some other kinds of commercial ventures.

Hello gang
We have five Advanced system 36 machines still out in our branches, with a splendid record.
Over the past several years, and because of the rapid acceleration in technology, the /36 solution
is becoming less and less viable.
I would very much appreciate any suggestions you might have with respect to the replacement, both
in terms of the HW and SW.
I believe an OS400/ISeries replacement at these remote branches would be over-kill.
A central ISeries, with the appropriate SW, and VPN was more in line with what I had in mind...
All suggestions welcome....
