Rob:

Though I probably wouldn't switch it all to *SHRPOOL1, I probably would use at
least one more shared pool, e.g., *SHRPOOL2, and start routing nearly
everything you currently have running in *BASE into it -- IBM servers, maybe
even subsystem monitors, etc.

My past understanding was that only memory from *BASE could be shifted to a
shared pool. That means that memory must first be released back to *BASE from
whatever pool is using it before it can be applied where it's needed. It also
means that things running in *BASE have a chance to start using the memory
while it's there. (Performance experts can comment on this, I hope.)

I routinely alter IBM-supplied routing entries and pre-start job entries to to
route to POOLID(2) for subsystems that have *BASE for the first pool entry as
well creating any of my own entries the same. For many *sbsds, I even remove
the *BASE entry from the pools so that the monitors don't run in it.

What I try to end up with is *BASE that acts (more or less) as the BASE pool
for memory allocation, not as a pool for running jobs. The memory in *BASE is
then relatively unused and can be understood to be "spare memory". This gives a
slightly better picture of how memory is being used or not used at any given
time. This can also give you a better basis for deciding whether to assign
minimum memory for other pools or not.
