I'm not a VB expert, so I can't help you with that end of it, but I wonder
if you could explain why you want to do this?  Is this data just your own
personal data, or is it data generated and/or maintained by an AS/400
application?

If it's your own personal data, does it need to be on the AS/400 and used by
other people? If not, just use one of the many inexpensive (or even free!)
SQL databases for your PC and access the data through ODBC.

But if you intend to modify data that is currently maintained by an
application on the host, have you checked to make sure that other files
don't have to be modified as well?  Often AS/400 applications have related
files that are maintained together with strict business rules in place, and
modifying data in one file could get other files out of synch.

That's the primary reason I usually recommend that client programs don't
perform database modification.
