Boy do I wish you set up our network from the get go.  Ours started with 5
pc snaked together with coax.  NO IP.  Most of what you list we have done
including switching to internal DNS, DHCP, Named services - not machines...
It has been a pain but I volunteered to take over network management.  Clean
up is going slowly but moving forward.  Down time has almost been eliminated
and redundancy is being added.

You included some great ideas that I did not think of. Thank you I will try
to incorporate them.  All, I suggest

Agreed. It matters.

What frequently happens is that the network is first setup up with just
a few machines.  And things are done the Fast way.  Then the network
grows (they always do).   Now that "fast" stuff starts causing
problems.
