warning

Is there a way to turn off write caching? When we have battery problems that
would be the first thing I would do.

That's an easy one - Airplane. I watched it with my kids just the other day.
They got a big kick out of the "drinking problem".

I would assume so. The battery protects the write cache on the drive
controllers on an iSeries just like it does on a PC. If main power
goes down
the drive controller hangs onto its write cache until power is
restored and
the controller can push that data onto the drive. Anyone who has
write
caching turned on w/o battery backup cache is asking for problems.
The
operating system thinks the data has been written to disk, but in
reality it
        hasn't.
