My recommendation is that when things are a little more "complicated", use a program instead and problem solved. I guess that a query is good for fast and easy tasks, straight forward logic and criteria. However, if it is a one shot program, I think that having the query defined with a little complex criteria is not bad at all. Everything depends on the programmer's judgement, I guess.
