I think it's amusing that John Dvorak of PC magazine kicks off this column with an analogy of the Mac to the AS/400. He often shows so little understanding of his audience. As an "industry insider" he's become so exposed to technology and concepts that are unfamiliar to his readers. He's mentioned the platform a few times, however, Dvorak has not impressed me as someone who really understands how the AS/400 works, how it has evolved, and how it really is used and can be used. How many of his readers have a clue about the AS/400? How many think it's a mainframe (and don't know what a mainframe really is either)? How many really care? In coming up with material for all his regular columns this guy is always running out of ideas. As a result, he gets emphatic about non-issues, and trumps up minor points into state-of-the-industry problems. This Mac column is funny because Dvorak can't really suggest an alternative, or come up with an example of someone who's doing things right. -Jim -----Original Message----- From: Mark Allen [mailto:allenmark@nu-z.net] Sent: Wednesday, June 19, 2002 10:49 AM To: midrange-l@midrange.com Subject: Mac is the AS/400 of Desktop Computing per Dvorak http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,4149,1885,00.asp Mac is the AS/400 of Desktop Computing Snip here...... Isn't it about time the Macintosh was simply discontinued-put down like an old dog? Why, exactly, does Apple maintain this line of machines instead of starting fresh or at least introducing something new with fresh legs. The Mac has become the AS/400 of desktop computing, except for the fact that it's prettier. Of course, if Apple never moves forward, what happens to the copycat Windows platform? Mark Allen I.S.
