It probably checks which connection you are connecting on, from outside
connection it gets forwarded.

That depends, if you do a ping yahoo.com  from the AS/400 does it return
the IP address of yahoo. If so it is doing what you need it to do so
leave
it set that way if not then try the IP address or your ISP's DNS.

You can. But after you get it working I would look at using an MX
record.
Software should use the A record if it does not find an MX record, but
some
may not.
