On a theoretical note-- have you ever noticed that you get "Save File
Wait" messages during save file operations?  Why?  This is a copy to
a disk file-- there shouldn't be any delay.

Disk or tape, there is always delay. Actually, backup to the top 3590 models
can be done at the same speed , sometimes even higher, as that to disk.
However, it's far from being instantaneous.
