What I've found so interesting about our Oracle DBA's is that they perform two completely different roles. First they're responsible for laying out and monitoring the technical nuts and bolts of Oracle on disk -- to the degree that they're practically Unix system administrators. Then they're defining the relational database including dictionaries, tables, indices, stored procedures, triggers. I do understand that some development shops define these as separate roles assigned to different positions. I think that so much crappy AS/400 code is out there because there are still so many development shops (in house and software companies) that barely design their databases. Tables crop up one at a time, with indexes to follow shortly thereafter. Maybe if folks had to hire database technicians the tech's would force them to design real databases. -Jim James P.
