I wondered this myself once. When I first started working on these systems
and 2Gb cards for our 740 were oh so pricey. Can't remember how much now,
but I think the total bill (8Gb per sys, 2 systems) was over $500,000.

So anyway, I went and read up on AS/400 memory, and according to IBM there
is error-checking inside these monstrous boards (for 740s anyway) that
account for cosmic rays and some other crazy stuff.

Amazingly, memory in the 170's looks a lot like the stuff I put in my
PC...hmmmmm. Wonder if there's any cosmic protection there!

Why exactly is it that IBM does not use PC standard memory chipsets? If
they
did, this 256M would cost about $80.
