I wondered this myself once. When I first started working on these systems and 2Gb cards for our 740 were oh so pricey. Can't remember how much now, but I think the total bill (8Gb per sys, 2 systems) was over $500,000. So anyway, I went and read up on AS/400 memory, and according to IBM there is error-checking inside these monstrous boards (for 740s anyway) that account for cosmic rays and some other crazy stuff. Amazingly, memory in the 170's looks a lot like the stuff I put in my PC...hmmmmm. Wonder if there's any cosmic protection there! jch -----Original Message----- From: Draper, Dale To: 'midrange-l@midrange.com' Sent: 9/25/01 4:18 PM Subject: RE: Memory Upgrade Why exactly is it that IBM does not use PC standard memory chipsets? If they did, this 256M would cost about $80.
