It's not a misnomer at all; the Red Cross has just put out an emergency call for blood donations. Even if the blood cannot be used right away, the reserves are being rapidly deplenished and will need to be filled. Donating blood doesn't seem like a big contribution to make, but it is worthwhile; anyone who is healthy and who hasn't donated in the last 2 months should consider it.
