You mean to tell me that if there is an entry for a given message in the system reply list *AND* the job is using INQMSGRPY(*SYSRPYL) *AND* the QSYSOPR message queue's delivery mode is *DFT... If these are all true, the system will still issue the default response and NOT the one specified in the system reply list?
Where can I see this gem in the manuals?

Yes. <G>
If either is *DFT, the default reply will be sent. If neither is *DFT, then
the job's setting will be used to determine if the system reply list should
be checked before waiting for a keyed reply.
