  No surprise there.  Quad Processor -vs- Single, 4 times the memory,
Latest version of OS and DB vs 6 versions older than current (circa
1996?), and most likely your M500 has a 2617 ethernet card which
couldn't get out of it's own way.

  Replace the Mod 500 with a 270 that is comparable to the Compaq and
you'd see 'significant improvement'.
