No doubt about that. I fully agree with you. I'll go one step further: In all my application work I NEVER use ANY native features. All access to screens, databases, what have you, must be externalized through an interface. All my applications have always (since 1986) been fully portable and could run on any box. If you want to access a customer record you don't read it, you call the customer object handler which will use SQL if it has too, or IMS, or ISAM, or in memory data, or... If you want to show a screen you invoke the screen handler, which will generate 5250, 3270, HTML, VT-100, Windows GUI, or whatever. The application programs never know. This is a tried and tested way of doing it. Nothing new here. The vendors hate it ("you mean you could run on my competitor's box if he gave you a better deal?"). So I laud your approach. Keep preaching the gospel, but go ALL the way. Don't rely on the AS/400 as the back-end. Then you are truly free.
