Seriously, here's the issue.

IBM built upgradeability into every initial System/38 and AS/400, and this 
was a selling feature of these systems.  As PC type hardware became more 
powerful and cheaper on the face of it (non-reliability has it's costs), 
AS/400 customers demanded less expensive equipment.

But less expensive equipment meant that IBM had to build less and less 
upgradeability into your equipment.  I went back and checked, the model E10 
was introduced in 1992.  How many desktop PCs that you purchased in 1992 
are still in use, and what is their value?

Time for a reality check.
