Why not create an INTRAnet application which would either email them their password or password hint. You see such applications all the time on site where users register in order to customize the site for their profile. When you create a user have them give you their mothers maiden name or another password hint and then add that to a database. When the user gets to the password hint Intranet page, ask for their email address and their password hint then verify the hint is correct and email their password. Heck, if your Intranet server is the AS/400 then you could write a little CGI that would generate a new password, e-mail it to the user, then do a CHGPWD on that user and set them to password expire at next logon. Looks like more than a little maintenance work would go into synchronizing the hint .DB with the user profiles.
