MaryLou,

The data in the QHST log is stored in physical files in the QSYS library. The
names of these files are in the pattern QHST######, where the #'s are
hexadecimal "numbers" (0-9, A-F). The files don't have a useful external
definition, so using Query on them directly is not fun, especially since there
will be multiple files involved much of the time. (I'm sure you've seen the
message in QSYSOPR about "Log version QHST###### in QSYS closed and should be
saved." - every time you get one of those, it's just closed one file and created
a new one.) A simple way to put it into a reportable form is to create a file
of your own with field definitions that fit the layout of the QHST files, then
CPYF from the QHST files to your file, then Query your file. A simple CL
program could use DSPFD or DSPOBJD to list the QHST files, loop around a CPYF
command that selects the messages that you want, then runs whatever queries you
need.

Note that normally the QHST files are written to asynchronously, so that getting
the absolute most recent entries from the current file is not guaranteed. To
force the most recent entries to the file, just do a DSPLOG.

Everyone,

I'm in the need to set up a program on my machine to find out what time and
which users at one building actually sign on and then sign off the
AS/400. I can find this information thru the "DSPLOG" command with one
message ID#CPIAD12, This lists the IP address of the machine that these
users are using. However, I need to filter it to the one set of IP
addresses. We have the building coded with IP #'s with one range of IP
#'s. I went to run a query, but I'm not sure what LIbraray to look for
this information in, or if that is the way to go Any help on this is really
appreciated...

And I decided to try you folks first before I get lost in the phone number
haze that is now IBM help line...
