I agree that the 400 needs a new image, but that is the onus of the IBM
marketing department, not the worlds business programmers. There are
many many tools available for the 400 which allow us to rapidly develop
e-commerce applications (Net.Data and many others).

Lets take a look at the uptime of Micro$ofts SQL 7.0 compared to to
DB2/400 (or whatever IBM is calling it these days), then take a look at
the system availability for Micro$oft OS's (WinNT, and Win9x) compared
to the system availability of the AS/400.

Now, we are comparing apples to apples here, and anyone who has worked
with NT knows the truth. When SQL 7.0 is up and running, if you have any
hair left after pulling the feat off, your NT server is sure to at some
point develop a case of the BSOD. How many times have you pressed enter
after typing PWRDWNSYS and gotten a blue screen???

No, it is not the AS/400, OS/400, or RPG that needs revamping, it is
IBM's marketing of the AS/400 which needs revamping.

I routinely install, and write software for linux systems using Postgres
SQL and I can't tell you how many times I have kicked and screamed over
an installation, quite the contrary to the several times I have
upgraded, or installed from scratch, OS/400.

I think that your sarcasm is mis-directed and inappropriate, in that,
when you actually get down to a comparison of platforms the AS/400 comes
out on top in all major areas even given the lack of support form IBM.
Why would IBM form such a tight alliance with an unstable OS as
Micro$oft NT? Well that is where the money is currently, once the money
runs out IBM will pack the AS/400 over to the next money makers camp and
grovel for scraps. Notice that this too is not fault of either RPG or
java programmers, the sole responsibility for this atrocity rest with
IBM.
