Well, one function of a DBA I haven't seen is to monitor and add views
(indexes[access paths]) to improve performance of frequently run
queries.  Yes, DBAs for Oracle or Informix or SQL Server also administer
security and maintain/service the software, and they have to recover
stuff when their systems crash. (which they do with a little too much
frequency for my taste!)
