But how much time did your company spend analysing the software to
ensure that it met their requirements? Did they visit any reference
sites.

It often surprises me(not saying that this is true in your case) that
some IT Directors sign on the dotted line without even seeing a working
version of the package they are purchasing. A controlled demo in a
software houses presentation room should not be enough to justify the
purchase of software. 

How many of us that have worked at software houses have heard the story
of the clients that bought software that hadn't even been developed yet,
because they fell for the salesman's blurb.
