AS/400's telnet is screen at a time type of input, not character at a time
such as dumb tubes or Telnet on a PC.

The data you type into an AS/400 session is not sent until you press the
<Enter> key.  For this "Auto Record Advance" to work, the Telnet
server would need to know when the cursor was in that location.  Which
obviously it doesn't know.

This explains what is happening, and why, but unfortunately does not
explain how to fix it.  It is a definite limitation with AS/400's mode of
screen operations.

I hope you find a solution, and if you do, please share it here.
