The clock chimed 9:44 AM -0400 7/12/99 when
                as400mail@smtpmail.nationcredit.com scribbled:
                >Nick,
                >
                >Interogating a alpha field as numeric needn't be all that
difficult seems
                >to me.
                >But, how do you intend to "convert" a decimal-positioned
"numeric"? For
                >example,
                >if your alpha field = '1000.50' and (stripped of decimal
point) you move the
                >alpha field into a numeric field defined as 10 0, the
resultant numeric could
                >become a value = "100,050". Conversely, if your alpha field
is '100,050'
                >and you
                >move it into a numeric field defined as 10 2, the resultant
numeric could

                >value = "1000.50". How many variations on the decimal
positioning are

a valid numeric,

If anyone is interested, I have a program (also a module)
that translates
alpha to numeric or the reverse. It also validates the alpha
field. It can
handle up to 25 digits. I use it to validate character input
fields as
numbers, format numeric fields inside strings, etc..
