I have used the Btrieve system for years with QBasic and I would guess it
is available for VB as well. It is totally crash proof and very fast at
retrieving records. Originally it was by Softcraft until it was acquired
by Novell. Later it was spunoff as Btrieve Co.

The key to the system is that it pre-images (toggable) all changes to the
database(s) so that in the event of a shutdown, it can automatically
rebuild the pointers. Lot's of PC software is based on Btrieve today.
This is a great crash-proof DB system.
