Jon,

Put me on the list. As I described, it is a very difficult to match
varying type parameters. I ended up creating procedures to
store and retrieve "parameters" to get around these limitations.
This technique provided other benefits, so all was not lost.
However, this technique is cumbersome for simple low-level
built-in type functions. One example that comes to mind is a
procedure that I created to edit any format numeric value using
a variable edit code or word (sometimes you just can't wait).

I based my original comment on the following limitations described
in the manual:

Note: Currently, the ILE RPG compiler only supports operational
descriptors for character and graphic fields and subfields.
Operational descriptors are not available for data structures,
arrays, or tables. In addition, operational descriptors are not
available for data of type numeric, date, time, timestamp, basing
pointer or procedure pointer.

In what way David ? I don't recall any more support on the system than RPG
"surfaces". I do agree however that the system needs to comlete the descriptor
support - or at least make it a lot more complete than it currently is. I'm
going to be discussing this with the developers when I get back to Rochester in
weeks time.

Just to help me in my pleading - how many of you would like to use descritors
but can't because too few data types are covered ??
