We are doing this, or just getting started.

Are you going to be running Domino on the 400, or another server? I recommend
on the 400.
Why? Because there are native data access protocols that are fast, fast, fast.
 Domino on
the 400 requires V4R2 or greater. There are multiple ways of doing this.
Notes LS:DO
commands are cool and with the native ODBC even your browser users are covered.
 DECS,
(Domino Enterprise Connection Services) is great and included in Domino 4.6.3
and above.
We are using it with 4.6.3a and loving it. For true data syncronization you
might have
to use Notes Pump. We haven't gone there. We like to exhaust the freebie
stuff first.
But the boss has already given me the green light if I want it. Client Access
is not
required.

Make sure that you define your requirements. It's most important that your
consultant
be familiar with Notes. It helps if they are not AS/400 phobic. Or you may
get a
patchwork of NT garbage in there. Have fun, "I am".

Subject: Communication between Notes & AS/400

We are getting ready to hire a consultant to write a lotus notes
application for us. The challenge is the application needs to retreive
data from the AS/400 and also update db's on the AS/400.

Eight years ago, we did something similiar, by doing a file transfer to the
AS/400 via PCSupport, then using RMTCMD to execute a program on the AS/400
to process the uploaded file, and finally doing another file transfer to
download the results. This system is still running, but it is time to move
on to new methods.

What would be the best method to handle the data transfer between Notes &
AS/400: ODBC, sockets....?????

We are currently using Client Access and running V4R1. By the time this
project is complete, we should be on V4R3.
