We upgraded an AS/400 from a 510 to a 730. We have a CL program wrote called
RCLSAV. It does all of
the reclaims and then all of the saves. It also logs start times and end times
of each step. We used
the exact same 3590 tape drive with the same controller card. Here is a query
of the run times of RCLSAV:
System Date of Length of Length of Length of Length of Length of
Length of Length of Total
Name Downtime RCLDLO RGZDLO RCLSTG SAVSYS NONSYS
SAVDLO SAV of IFS Length
GDIHQ 1999-01-15 1:11 4 43
   2 2 2:02
GDIHQ 1998-11-13 11 3:06 51 1:55
   2 6 6:13

Evidently the 3590 is one heck of a tape drive. But it takes a honkin' big
AS/400 to drive it at full speed.
Both the old machine and the new machine were at the same level's of OS/400.
We run RCLSAV every 8 weeks.
In summary the new hardware:
Cut our RCLSTG down to 1/3
Cut our SAVSYS from 51 minutes to 4 minutes, down to 8% of original.
Cut down our SAVLIB NONSYS from 1hour 55 minutes to 43 minutes, down to
37% of original, (1/3)
Ran so darn fast that the biggest complaint was 'My jobs are not
running. Did you check for spool
files. No, oh my gosh the job is already done!'
Our speed results even stunned the team in Rochester. Yes we have restored, a
complete system restore,
the backup is good. We did a side by side, so we really played.

This is the change in our disk usage between those times:
1999-01-15 100.6GB 34.7% or 330mb used
1998-11-13 380MB 84.2% or 323mb used

Subject: 620 vs 720 comparisons

I'm looking for some good detail information via web on the benefits of
going to a 720 instead of a 620. We're trying to convince our management
that
the cost is nill or minimal, but need some good concrete information
to pull them our way in the way of performance, new features, etc. I have
the article from the February AS/400 magazine but need more.

Thanks!
