Passing parms to query

So... I didn't know you could do this!  I've been trying it... selecting
on a field with a selection value of :field and it works great as long
as the field is alpha.  But if the field I'm selecting on is numeric...
no luck.  It runs but doesn't select the record.  I've tried creating a
QMQRY just to make sure and that works fine.  Anyone got any ideas?
