Use apostrophes (') instead of quotes (") around your variable value. A
quoted string is interpreted to be a column name. A character literal must
be enclosed in apostrophes.

PS

This is helpful when you have a column name that is also an SQL reserved
word. For example, if you had a column named GROUP, SQL would complain
about this:

select group from table1

thinking that the word group was starting a group-by clause. Quoting the
column name solves the problem:

select "GROUP" from table 1

Subject: RE: Passing Parameters to Query

OK, I guess I belong in the slow group.

I set up a query with the following record selection:

  FGNAME EQ :item

where FGNAME is an alpha field in the file I'm querying. I then
interactively ran the STRQMQRY command against the saved query definition.
I got the following prompt:

Type a value for variable "ITEM" and press Enter.

I then entered "ABC" and pressed Enter. I got the following error:

Message ID . . . . . . : SQL0206 Severity . . . . . . . : 30

Message type . . . . . : Diagnostic

Date sent . . . . . . : 12/28/98 Time sent . . . . . . :

Message . . . . : Column ABC not in specified tables.
