I'd suggest RPG IV: convert a program you are familiar 
with to use as a template to learn about the "D" specs.
You'll love it!

If you really want to use RPG III, use the old 
"array over data structure" trick.  Overlay a large data
structure with an array.  Use the DS as your *ENTRY
PLIST and manipulate the array...
